The health care delivery system, regulations surrounding it, and the somewhat bureaucratic process of having your claims paid can make it difficult to manage your health. But you now have access to technology tools to work through the complexity, optimize the time and money you spend on health care, and help you live a healthier life. From your computer, smart phone or tablet, there are many ways to become a better consumer of health care.

Nowadays, many medical groups provide online portals for patients to review and maintain their medical records and to provide consistent information to other health care providers. With data like lab results, current prescriptions and physician notes in one securely accessible place, it is easier to keep you and all your providers on the same page.

Many of the physician portals also allow you to interact and schedule appointments online. This can save you a lot of time and aggravation by avoiding waiting on hold “for the next available representative.” With 24/7 access, you have the option of handling such details when it fits your needs. The portals often include the ability to communicate privately with your providers in writing, improving the accuracy of information going between physicians and patients.

When communities reopen, telemedicine may remain part of the “new normal.”

In the current pandemic environment, many of our regular physician visits have been transformed from in-office-in-person to a phone call or video conversation from home. This has primarily been to protect patients and providers from further spread of coronavirus. When the situation allows communities to reopen, telemedicine visits may remain part of the “new normal” for routine follow ups and minor health issues. Remote visits show promise as an efficient way to leverage doctor time management without compromising care for a variety of conditions.

Health plans also have online member resources that allow you to check on the status of your claims. This can be a convenient way to review billed services for accuracy.

Finally, technology gives the ability to track your progress toward fitness and wellness goals, as well as monitoring a number of health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. Many health apps also let you to share your data directly with your health providers, making for a better collaboration between you.
